Coventry Naming Ceremonies

Baby naming celebrant in Coventry

A naming ceremony is the warm, non-religious way to welcome a child and to ask the people you trust to stand around them. No church, no christening, no promises anyone has to fake.

I write and lead naming ceremonies across Coventry and Warwickshire, in gardens, function rooms, front rooms and parks. They usually run twenty to thirty minutes, which is exactly as long as small children will allow.

Guideparents instead of godparents

Most families choose two to four guideparents: the adults who will be in this child's corner as they grow. Each one makes a promise in their own words, which is reliably the bit that makes the grandparents cry.

There's no religious element and no limit on who can take the role. Siblings, best friends, grandparents, the neighbour who has been there since day one.

Not just for babies

Naming ceremonies work beautifully for older children too: adoption and fostering celebrations, blended families marking a new shape, a young adult legally changing their name.

I've led ceremonies for eighteen-year-olds choosing their own name, and they are among the most moving things I do.

Things families like to include

A time capsule everyone writes a note for. Planting a tree. A candle lit by each grandparent. Older siblings given a job so they don't feel sidelined. A reading from a children's book instead of a poem.

Everything is optional. The only fixed part is the child's name, said out loud, properly, in front of everyone who loves them.

Kind words

"Jo managed to capture the intention behind my son's naming ceremony expertly and sensitively, with a little humour sprinkled in too. We couldn't have asked for a more personalised touch."
