The Lake at Barston: a lakeside wedding venue with a difference

There are wedding venues that look beautiful in photographs. And then there are venues that you arrive at and immediately think, "Yep. I can see why couples get married here." That was my feeling at The Lake at Barston Restaurant.

Located at the West Midlands Golf Club in Barston, Solihull, the venue sits amongst acres of countryside, landscaped gardens and, of course, the rather spectacular 21-acre Barston Lake.

It's also incredibly well placed, 10 minutes from Solihull, Coventry and Birmingham and less than five miles from the NEC, M6, M42 and Birmingham International Airport. So you get that feeling of being away from everything without actually being miles away from anywhere.

And then there's the lake. The lake really is the star of the show. The restaurant has panoramic views, while outside there are gardens, patios and the gazebo, where Sarah and Jay chose to have their ceremony. And I completely understand why.

There's something rather lovely about stepping outside for your ceremony, surrounded by greenery and water, rather than being tucked away in a function room. Luckily for us, the weather behaved itself too. No rain. No mad dash inside. No emergency umbrellas. Just a lovely dry day and a beautiful outdoor ceremony overlooking the lake, in a venue that lets you make it your own.

One of the things that stood out to me about The Lake at Barston is that they don't seem to be trying to make every wedding identical. Their wedding information talks about tailoring the day around each couple, with bespoke options for menus and different styles of celebration. They can host everything from smaller celebrations through to weddings of up to around 200 guests, with the restaurant available exclusively for the wedding party.

And that flexibility matters. Because weddings aren't one-size-fits-all. Some couples want traditional. Some want elegant. Some want relaxed. And some, like Sarah and Jay, want skulls, skeletons and a wedding that looks absolutely nothing like anyone else's. The Lake at Barston Restaurant was able to accommodate that wonderfully.

And the team. I have to give a special mention to Amy and the on-site team. They were fantastic. The venue has a dedicated wedding team, and on Sarah and Jay's day, there was a real sense that everyone wanted the day to run smoothly and, importantly, that the couple actually enjoyed it.

That's something I notice. The best venue teams aren't just thinking about what's happening next on their checklist. They're watching the couple. They're anticipating what needs doing. They're quietly sorting things behind the scenes so everyone else can enjoy themselves. And that's exactly what I saw.

Would I recommend couples take a look? Absolutely. If you're looking for a wedding venue around Solihull, Coventry or Birmingham and you want somewhere with beautiful outdoor space, a lake backdrop, indoor and outdoor ceremony options and a team willing to work with you rather than simply hand you a standard package, I'd definitely say: go and have a look. Go see the lake. Go stand in the gazebo. Have a chat with Amy and the team. And see whether you can picture yourselves getting married there.

Because after being part of Sarah and Jay's wonderfully unusual day, I can honestly say that The Lake at Barston made a brilliant setting for a very special wedding.
