How much does a celebrant cost in the UK?

Nobody likes asking about money, so let's get it out of the way. Celebrant fees in the UK vary quite a lot, and the honest answer to "how much?" is "it depends what you need." What I can do is explain exactly what affects the number so you can compare like for like instead of guessing.

First, understand what the fee actually covers. It is not the hour on the day. A ceremony written properly involves an initial chat, a long planning meeting, writing a full bespoke script, redrafting it until you're happy, liaising with your venue and other suppliers, travel, a rehearsal where useful, and then leading the ceremony itself. For most weddings that's somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five hours of work spread over months.

Second, the type of ceremony matters. A funeral is usually arranged in days rather than months, so the work is compressed but intense. A naming ceremony is typically shorter than a wedding. A vow renewal for eight people in a back garden is a different job from a wedding with 150 guests, three readers and a handfasting.

Third, travel and timing. Local ceremonies cost less than ones that need overnight stays. Peak Saturdays in summer book out first. Bank holidays and short-notice bookings can carry a premium with most celebrants because of the diary juggling involved.

Fourth, extras. Some couples want help writing their vows, a rehearsal with the full wedding party, a printed keepsake copy of the ceremony, or additional ritual elements that need sourcing and setting up. These are usually optional add-ons rather than baked into a base fee.

Remember the legal fee is separate. In England and Wales a celebrant ceremony isn't the legal marriage, so most couples pay a registry office separately for the paperwork. Budget for both, and don't let anyone tell you the registry bit is a hidden extra: it's a small, quick appointment and it buys you total freedom over the ceremony that actually matters.

Questions worth asking any celebrant before you book: Is the script written from scratch for us, or adapted from a template? How many drafts do we get? Do you attend a rehearsal? What happens if you're ill on the day? Is travel included? What deposit secures the date and when is the balance due?

The cheapest option is rarely the one people remember, and the most expensive isn't automatically the best. What you're really buying is someone who will listen properly and then stand up in front of everyone you love and get it right. Get in touch and I'll give you a straight quote for exactly what you're planning.
